What is Severus Snape's middle name?

I've got reviewers over on fanfic.net wanting to know why I changed Severus Snape's middle name in Improbable Felicity. (Felicity was written before book 7 came out, and I made up the middle name "Xerxes" for him.) I am unaware of what his proper middle name is and none of the reference places I trust shows me ( Read more... )

I agree with Juno, JKR has never stated that Snape has a middle name. However, fandom has given him his fathers name as a middle name many times.

OMG! I would have sworn his middle name was Tobias in canon, but I just looked it up in the wiki and you guys are right, he has no official middle name.

That is new to me. I was almost sure it was Tobias.

And that's because it's been used so often it's become fanon, which can feel every bit as real as canon, if it's repeated enough.

I think JKR stated outright that he has no middle name.

Thank you, dearest. They had me doubting myself. But then, I never managed to get onto Pottermore, and I know JKR has given loads more information than she gave us in canon.

Here are my guesses, knowing how Rowling likes to use names with special meaning/symbolism:

Pantoleon: a healer and martyr who cured a child bit by a snake, converting to Christianity when his prayer was answered.

Hilary: from St. Hilary of Poitiers! Patron saint against snake bites.

Patrick: St. Patrick of course

And my number one choice in the running: Ragnar, father of Ivar the Boneless, killed when the Anglo king threw him into a pit of vipers.

You are such a scholar, Betz. I adore "Ragnar" as a middle name for him. ♥

Severus Ragnar Snape. Has such a ring to it, like he could have a bit of badass Viking blood in him.
