Every time I try and do an LJ cut I realize I have forgotten how to do it and have to look it up in the LJ FAQ.

foundation of probability lecture I am sitting in on

I have been doing a little bit of work on induction lately -- do you think its fair to characterize the one (mathy) as a formalization of the other (phily)?

I also picked up Fodor's Holism: A Shopper's Guide about a month ago. It is about semantic holism vs. molecularism. I was looking for something that could help me think through how relational properties can change objects, but alas this was not meant to be. Now I am working through Frederick Schmidtt's Socializing Metaphysics which you might actually enjoy: there is a defense in there of realism about social-groups-as-actual-really-real-individual-agents rather than conventionalism about social-groups-being-said-to-act-as-a-single-agent.

What is your grad school list? Mine is up over here and my top picks right now are MIT, UCLA and UMass-Amherst and MAN OH MAN OH MAN AM I TERRIFIED OF EVERYTHING. 14 so far but at least Madhok seemed to approve of the spread.

Hmm, you'll have to be more precise on what the philosophical account of induction is. To be honest I don't think so, because mathematical induction is a rather strange notion. I'll try to explain it to you, and why it works, as best I can ( ... )

but I met a lot of people and spent a lot of time dancing with French Canadians of both genders.

The real question is, how much time have you spent debauching with French Canadians of both genders? I am much amused by the thought of you interspacing your lectures with hedonistic orgies over in Old Britain, but I must say, you could at least find some real Frenchmen/women rather than "French Canadians" to, er, consort with.

This is expensive and I have no idea how to create a statement of purpose that signals my ability to endure graduate school yet sounds genuine.

Why not post up your drafts on lj? It might help to get other people's feedback, especially since your friends are doing the same thing.
