Please, don't sacrifice any mice! I'd pay (not much) to watch the dancing around in a loincloth of USB cable though.
I am not very tech savy either. I am becoming more so because of training, but customers still call with questions that I have no idea of how to answer. Good thing we have an internal tech help line.

I don't think I'll be in the market for a computer any time soon. My notebook is relatively new and shiny. I'm just sad that my old programs (Flash, Photoshop, etc.) are trapped in my old desktop.
i know you said you tried reconnecting all the pluggy bits, but does that include the RAM? try pulling the RAM out and putting it back in - that fixed my Mac once. didja try blowing on it NES style?
i am pretty sure the plaintive beep means either the RAM is funky or the processor is funky.
