Heh--Kim got me started on House recently. I've watched a few episodes from this season and then got interested enough to go back to season 1 (we're almost thru it).
It's amazing how absurdly formulaic it is & yet it's still entertaining even though I *know beyond knowing* that diagnosis 1 and 2 will always nearly kill the patient & MRI machines are more dangerous than wearing a red shirt on Star Trek.
Well death on this show is apparently no barrier to the actor returning: AMBER. I am at the same stage you're at and yeah the Amber thing is pretty much the coolest plot that's happened in a while. I get sort of bored of the medical dramas. I wish we had more episodes about Foreman again. He is such a brilliant actor and we only got to see him cry that once a couple seasons ago...

The suicide was indeed a surprise, and I think unnecessary (Kal Penn rocks, and they've now closed the door for him returning.)
I can't say anymore since you're not caught up to the very end, except "Arrrgh! Damn you cliffhanger!"
