Fear is, at the core, a survival instinct. If we didn't have fear, we would take greater risks and increase the potential of our demise. True, with enough reasoning and common sense you can figure out what would be a good idea or bad idea even without fear, but as the human race proves time and time again, reasoning and common sense is almost extinct.
That's why in London they're talking about padding lampposts - apparently people keep walking into them because they're too busy texting or fiddling with their MP3 players.
What worries me most would be a robots "reasoning skills and abilities beyond humans"
Have you ever seen "No country for old Men", The main character (well, thats disputable... i would say the real main character is tommy lee jones...anyways...) has an inexplicable sense of reasoning, to the point where it blinds him to people emotions, but its completely reasonable to him.... this is the concept that frieghtens me the most.
Quite possibly my favorite line from any recently movie is the very last line of this conversation:
Carla Jean Moss: You don't have to do this. Anton Chigurh: [smiles] People always say the same thing. Carla Jean Moss: What do they say? Anton Chigurh: They say, "You don't have to do this." Carla Jean Moss: You don't. Anton Chigurh: Okay. [Chigurh flips a coin and covers it with his hand] Anton Chigurh: This is the best I can do. Call it. Carla Jean Moss: I knowed you was crazy when I saw you sitting there. I knowed exactly what was in store for me. Anton Chigurh: Call it.Carla Jean Moss: No. I ain't
