i like to think that pain is only in the head! physical pain, after all, is a signal sent from your nerves to your brain- signals that may sometimes be mis-transmitted, or sometimes mis-interpreted!
that said I think there are better ways at dealing with something than simply getting better at tolerating it, whether it's desire, pain or anything in between. The most important thing I think is not to block out pain (or desire) completely, because that's difficult, dangerous (if you fail, which you might) and it's plain not-living! I think it's more important to be able to get back up on your feet and keep moving, to recover, to get back up, again and again.
We can bear with pain (or desire) by distracting ourselves from it, in a sense, by focusing on something more powerful, more important. Pain exists because it works- it lets you know that you're alive, and there's probably something wrong, and that you should probably do something about it.
