Doubleheader today.
First, Steve Kloves pronouncing about Snape--that he could predict where Snape's character was going, because JKR "is completely original," but he always felt Snape would be heroic (does he know JKR doesn't comprehend the character as such?)...."Completely original"? Not really. It's her borrowing of the archetype of the Gothic Hero that makes it so obvious, from the first book, that Snape is headed toward heroism and that a major story of redemption will be an underpinning to the novels.
Local paper today--the woman from Leaky Cauldron, who did the fanbook about JKR and HP.....Oh, blazing insight to make one leap to buy the book: not only does she think that there is still debate about whether or not Snape is good or evil (er--has she read the final book, at least, yet?) , but she offered this gem: "He's a very brave guy, but he's not a nice man."
Brilliant! Piercing! Illuminating! Perspicacious!
Or..................not. *eye roll* It was good for a snide laugh, though. Because, of course, in the deepest, darkest days of a war, the REALLY important quality for a freedom fighter to have is.....niceness.
Obviously, we won't get into the whole analytical, like, thing, y'know, about Harry's point of view, and all that totally too, like, hard thinky stuff.
Nice.
In Shakespeare's time, "nice" meant foolish. Perhaps that's what she meant. Yeah. Yeah--there you go.
Well, so much for the nice observations of the day. More fun and more insight to be found on the DW5 DVD commentary--Moffat My Hero. Hearts and Flowers to Moffat. If, for nothing else, than wholly dissing the lunatic fringe idea that River = Eleven's mother. Very funny to watch Karen Gillan's reaction, as the concept clearly gave her the heebie-jeebies; she couldn't really form much of a response except to note the intense flirting between River and the Doctor.....But Moffat gets more bonus points for dismissing, out of hand, the wretched plot lines of the companion as Doctor's love interest. Add to it all his other recent comments about DW's being "life-affirming," and it's just about enough to wash other, nice interviews from my mind. :D
