I am trying to be back around again, even though it means I get a lot of flack for being antisocial from the hausfrau, who is on summer vacation and has only my poor wretched self for company at the end of the day. The rest of the time he spends cooking me dinner and feeding socks to the dog and
brutalizing the back deck in the name of building

Melodrama aside, it really is nice to get a glimpse into what's going on for you.
I'm happy to hear that you have your own nook - personal space is incredibly important in a home that is shared.
'Hausfrau' just made me burst out laughing. :D
I kinda like the second idea for the legs rather than the first or third one. The iron claws are...maybe a bit heavy (in appearance) than the filing cabinet can compensate for. They need really grand furniture on them. Like an ancient, cushy, upholstered couch of fluffy velvetiness. Or...something.
Moving on! Houses are always a bundle of projects from what I understand. I hope you enjoy working on yours. :)

I like hairpin legs. They are super retro-looking and truly make me think of this 70s library I used to go to when I was a kid. But you may have more stylish sense than I. I'd be like, "I'MMA PAINT IT PINK!"

Oh man, I am full of opinions! It's kind of amazing that you have such a nice card file, those things go for a quite a few dollars these days - I would kill for one. How tall do you want it? Because if you want it side-table height (which makes sense to me?), I worry that hairpin legs that length might not be able to hold the weight of it. Also, the proportions seem a little wrong - the hairpin legs look a too delicate, maybe? And I think the spindle Home Depot legs might be too much wood.
I'm really into vintage industrial stuff right now (like, um, everyone else), so I can totally see some forged-iron legs on it - like these ones from Lee Valley if you roughed 'em up a little (in the vein of something like this. You could probably even commission something simple like this, or this, or this from a local iron works for pretty cheap, get the exact measurements you need, and have them stick some tiny casters on so you could move it around. You could also do something diy like thisAlso, well done with the ( ... )

Your deck (with the planters! naw!) has seriously inspired me to not give up on my stupid house. My problem is that it just feels like such an unending series of huge projects. I was talking to Owen about how I had the apartment pretty much done - done to like, Ikea standards, but DONE - because I couldn't actually change anything. No crown moulding, no painting, no floors. But now I look at the light fixtures and want to rip them out of the ceiling, which is not a reasonable or realistic reaction. One thing at a time. Or something.
