notes on a utopian information system

I'm writing my paper on feminism/libraries/radical organizing [which is singlehandedly ruining my chances at finishing big bang, and also distracting me from the very important task of haggling for over-priced Beirut tickets for the July 9th show at the Phoenix in Toronto], and I found this passage from 1972 in Revolting Librarians:

We need to ( Read more... )

OH EM GEE.

You'll get to meet The Peteyator in person and he can lick your face off with the same tongue he probably just spent three hours licking his butt with. WHY WOULD YOU NOT BE EXCITED? Plus me = having car = taking you to DO JUNK without the retardation of the TTC. Ahaha, I've already like, HIJACKED your TO visit even though it's not 100% positive.

I was about to ask you about these Lebanon people you're coming to see. Oh band names. SIGH!

SOUNDS GOOD TO ME! I bet I could rival Petey for gasiness, let me tell you. OR RATHER LET ME NOT TELL YOU, UM. But I will let you know once the dates are firmed up, of course. I'm so happy to have multiple family/music/friends excuses to come visit. Now I have my fingers crossed for a massive heatwave, too, because I love me some city humidity. :D :D :D

(& it's true, as a band name it sucks: I get an irrational thrill every time someone talks about the city, and now I have this halfcocked idea that it's a fabulous place to visit, or smthg, what.)

YOU ARE IN THE ANNEX? SEXCELLENT!! I believe we will be staying with a friend nearby, although my geography is a little foggy still. I am dead set on coming and checking out your sitch for evidence of laugh tracks and cheap sex toys, OF COURSE. I NEED TO SEE THIS DINER.

aksdjfadadsfkljas, I've been waffling on coughing up for this show for forever. They are playing the Phoenix which is like, very close to you, I guess. But I don't know if it's the kind of venue where they sell last-minute tickets on the day of, or not. Because I'd rather not pay $112 per ticket on craigslist, BUT I WILL, GOD HELP ME. Finally being employed has destroyed my sense of restraint, evidently.

dude, the phoenix is really really small? so I dunno. it's sold out, really? I'm -- not surprised, but fairly surprised. stuff doesn't tend to sell out in this city. WEIRD.

It was sold out weeks ago, back when I first checked. The little jerk only comes to Canada like, once a year, so I'm not that surprised. Why he didn't pick a DECENTLY SIZED venue on top of that ridiculous gig at the Montreal Jazzfest is so beyond me. I WEEP.

It's a very apt suggestion, but one that's heavily dependent, I think, on having single-payer health insurance. If people had coverage a lot more could work part-time jobs. Especially as different jobs have moved to 24 hour work, it would be a sensible move.

Yeah, I hate to think that this article is assuming that librarians are all second-income-earning wimmin who are already tacked onto hubby's health insurance anyway. Yikes.

It would work up here in Canada, though: tbh I didn't even think of that point.

I work in the library at school, albeit as...middle-management and I can honestly say not one of them sound half so erudite, mostly because they're too busy demanding their collections be over 80% capacity which we don't have room for, and thus ensuring that we can't be creative at all except in the ways in which we make signs for overflow carts. BAH.

Also, hi, where have you been, lady? I haven't seen hide nor hair of you in awhile.

Ha, posting once every two weeks is about as prolific as I ever get, I'm afraid. :/

And omg, you don't work at the Beinecke, do you? Do they even let students look at their sacred objects? I didn't even have the balls to apply for their internships last year, I was so convinced some bright-eyed young American(s) would get them all. Anyway: rest assured that your system is probably no more draconian than anyone else's. A library is no place for creativity.

Ahahah, no, I work in Sterling and sometimes get shipped out to the classics library. Students don't work in Beinecke, we are not to be trusted, SO clearly you should've applied to the intership.

But you guys have what, the second largest academic library in the country? God, I can't even imagine. O.O

It doesn't look like they're doing those internships again this year: I can't imagine it's because the money dried up, but if I were them I probably wouldn't want to sort through 5000 applications again.
