That book was awesome, and gorgeous, and basically the most blatant self-insertion fantasy I have ever read. Librarian from Toronto moves up to a Victorian house on an island in the deep north of cabin country in Ontario and catalogues a Susanna Moodie type's library and gets eaten out by the house's pet bear every night. Realistic, feminist, and pretty hot as far as the bestiality goes. And then we gave it a national award. YES, CANADA. I just wish we were still writing things half as fucking interesting these days.
In other news, a classmate of mine was runner-up in the CBC National Fiction Competition, winner of a major litmag's nonfiction competition and is awaiting publication in a third magazine. I just. What am I doing with my life.
