I just happened to discover this fic through Pinboard recs. Your writing here is absolutely gorgeous. Also, I am moved by the idea of Alec being guilt-stricken at their retreat from their loved ones and from the war effort. Especially, as Seregil notes, given how much each of them has suffered already. "They will come when they need us" is a lovely bit of foreshadowing for the third book.

(Ah, and now I remember: You're also the author of the disturbingly hot and also deftly characterized "My Most Kindly and Gracious Master.")
