My Big Kids were 80s metalers in and around Santa Ana. The children of the last white-flight holdouts. Except for the decade, they sound exactly like yours. One of them bought some spiked mountain-climbing boots once and stomped around the apartment complex, terrorizing all the little kids, until some parents called the police. Another, our next-door neighbor, used to host Dungeons & Dragons games on the front porch that our apartments shared. They would keep us up late with their battle cries, and then my dad would go out and fight with them. Even the Big Kid Nerds were thugs.
