Some of these descriptions remind me that, as you note, the winner has to host next year, and there are countries that may have decided they couldn't afford to win.

This was given to me as the explanation for Ireland. Apparently they won too many and were sick of hosting, so they're determined to not have to do it again. 8-)

I thought there were far fewer truely dreadful entries this year which was good but no entries which enthused me like Lordi did last year which was bad. I was curious to see if Lordi's win might convince a few countries to cut loose but I think that this year the songs as a whole were more conservative rather than less (Ukraine being a noble exception ( ... )

Although I personally missed the preliminary final this year (something about having to go listen to real music [tm]), the Swiss entry was actually reccomended to me by a friend. If you get a chance, see it and be amused.
