I may be late, but I'll be up to date when I can shimmy like my sister Kate

Here is one of the ways in which mathematics has blown my mind recently: it turns out that it is possible to construct a bijection between the natural numbers and the set of all primes. That is to say, if we take the natural numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, and so on) and the prime numbers (2, 3, 5, 7, and so on), there exists some function (beats me what, but ( Read more... )

this is probably wretched of me, but: over the weekend, this southern rocker i adore covered 'holland 1945' and after the show my roommate turned to me and said, i didn't know that song, what was it, why were you crying, and apparently i made some really appalled faces? so i told her, whilst still making appalled faces, and she rolled her eyes and said clearly she must be a bad hipster because she knew of jeff mangum and his projects but had never actually listened to in the aeroplane..., blah blah blah blah.

and then i told her she was not only a bad "hipster" (air quotes and everything, because i hate all people) but also a bad music fan in general because seriously, yeah, that album. i remember what the day was like when i listened to it for the first time; i remember the heartbreaks it nursed me through; i remember the adventures it soundtracked. i will always love it. desert island album, for now and forever.

dude, I saw that post, and wanted to grab the tracks but didn't have the time; I'm getting them now. (actually, today at work my, uh, sometime partner in shenanigans put Deja Entendu on, and I turned to him and went, "hey, you know that album you really hate? with the dude and the screeching? yeah, tomorrow I'ma play you two Jesse Lacey covers from that album." his face was priceless, I tell you what.)

but yeah, honestly, I would straight up cry if pretty much anyone covered those songs in my presence. once upon a time I sang a cover of "two-headed boy" with my wretch high school indie rock band, and it was an epoch in my life, as they say.

(full disclosure, though: I did not actually love it at first listen. a friend made me a copy, and I listened once and went "eh", then put it on again about a month later, was blown away, and listened to it on repeat for the entire night and probably most of the next week. it's been in the special place ever since.)

Yeah, I've definitely been thinking I need to give it as much of a re-watch as possible before the new season starts. At the very least I'd better watch S3 or I'll probably be totally lost, but I've been feeling nostalgic for the early bits, too, so I'd like to do the whole thing if I can find the time.

And yeah, honestly. They're such wonderfully gritty characters, it really seems to miss the point.
