Hahaha, well that's exactly the sort of data I need for my paper. That'll be a good aspect of it ;)

I like how for "What rating of slash fanfiction do you READ?" the one with the most votes is NC-17 ;)

I figured that would be one with a high number ;)

I felt so conflicted when it came to the "what rating do you read/write" questions. I went with the most common ratings for my current fandom, but I've had periods where I've only written R, or periods when I've only read gen etc. Also, I still don't know the difference between R and NC-17 - I'm a non-US person, and no one has been able to explain it to me :(

I'm happy to explain!

In the US, when a movie is rated R, it means there is most likely violence, cussing (more than a certain number of 'fuck' etc.) and sex in it, but the sex is not going to be terribly graphic. You probably won't see a full sex scene, but if there is sex, there will be exposed breasts for sure. The rating will (rarely) jump to NC-17 when the sex scenes are very graphic, heading more toward a pornographic sequence. It could also jump to NC-17 if the violence has graphic aspects of it that involve more controversial topics like rape, torture etc...

Check out these links:
the MPAA website
another information rating website

I hope that helped!

I think that's incredibly weird - down here, R is the rating for porn or extreme violence, while MA 15+ is the rating equivalent to your R. Do you know why the rating is called NC-17? Can you see those movies if you're 17 or over?

Take a peek at those sites I linked to. There is a lot of good information in them.

As far as I know, in NYC at least, you can enter an R rated movie without an adult as long as you are 16+ years old. NC-17 is 17+... So I guess it is more based on how mature your mindset is, rather than your age (18 is adult age in the US).
