Sunshine during a thunderstorm

Unexpectedly, I ended up being rather active in fandom today, people!

I posted up a bunch of stuff on the kakairu community -- mostly threads that shi_chan06 and I did for kannagara_rpg, then sat back and didn't expect much out of it, until straussmonster came along and commented (and was actually the first commenter too)!

From there a very interesting conversation ensued. Everything ( Read more... )

Thanks. Sorry I've been so out of touch. Between my insane application process and what free time I try and devote to any kind of not-as-stressful activity, I've really gotten terrible with keeping up with people. @___@;;;

I completely identify with Kakashi on a more personal level, especially with issues such as emotional identity and capacity to try to reach out to others. I am used of holding putting relationships at an arm's length. I have close companions, once, but they have all moved away or moved on from me. Now I have acquaintances. I have never fell in love. Even in my high school, my crushes were consisted of, "hey, he's a good guy, shame he's taken," and never in infatuation. I can see some Kakashi in me, or maybe I can see some me in Kakashi ( ... )

That's an interesting reading of Kakashi. What I mean by "owning himself" as a character, however, isn't so much as the fact that he is in control of himself, or of his actions, so much as if he has a self to claim that is separate from the roles he plays. And while Naruto and Sasuke do not have agency in the sense of not being able to do what they want because Kishimoto uses them as chess pieces to illustrate a larger point, at least they have selves, in the sense that they function for their own purposes, have desires and dreams, and operate for their own intentions.

I feel Kakashi has a lack of self in the sense that he doesn't do any of that, and well -- everything else I said in the big debate. xD IDK if you read it or not, though. It's so long!

Anyway, it's interesting that you identify with Kakashi...! I had no idea.

Oh, that's what you mean by "owning", then. I didn't read the thread you linked until after I posted the comment. I merely thought that by owning, it means by taking hold and then let go stop trying to make some identity to yourself and what you have accomplished ( ... )

Ah, well, my analysis is far less sophisticated than yours, and I analyze Kakashi rather as a person that according to his function in the story (though sometimes I'll do this to ( ... )

Are you of the opinion that he has an identity outside of shinobi/jounin/instructor/legend? Does he exist, in and of himself, as his own person who has some kind of ownership over himself and who he is?

No. I think shinobi training in general tries to bred out a strong sense of self-identity, and Kakashi in particular I see as quite fractured - he has his best friend's eye in his head and lives for Konoha and hides behind his skills and his porn.
