Get it fixed

Are you sure you don't want to get it fixed?
It may be just the capacitor. I have one too, and older (pre-2000) Seiko Kinetics have capacitors that eventually need replacement. (Kind of ruining the whole purpose of a quartz watch that doesn't have a battery to replace.)
Getting the capacitor replaced is cheaper than a new watch.
OTOH, if you buy a new one, new Seiko Kinetics have much better capacitors.

I thought about it, but the quotes I'm getting were in the range of $80-160 :-/ maybe after I look at my tax returns this year, hopefully I don't owe anything to Uncle Sam :-x

Sorry to hear about your Seiko. I have the same model and received it about the same time, Feb. 2000. It too has taken a beating and I have worn it everyday since. It's still holding up. The band and case shows wear but the crystal is scratch free which is amazing. You can't go wrong with Seiko. By the way, how did you Seiko come to an end?
The Seiko 5M43-0A29 is an amazing watch. My Father bought his one in South Africa Just before he left the police force in about 1994 i think. He has just given me the watch as he got given a new one. When growing up i never remember a single day that he never wore the watch, before he gave it to me it was the first time the watches strap had ever been replaced and today it still works perfectly fine. The Case shows its age but its amazing that there is still not a single scratch on the Screen. I love this watch
