It always diminishes the lure, creativity, and “special”ness of whatever it was.
Whether we are talking about case-mods, wardriving, “going green” or in the case of what irked me, body modification, it all tends to be the same.

My ink is something I've always wanted. For me. For art, for expression, for themes or ideals that I feel or aspire to in my life or my persona. I designed them myself and for reasons. Yes, I have hieroglyphs and kanji but it's mainly because it's a more artistic way of expressing a very specific idea - a picture or shape rather than words (to an English speaker like me). My tattoos are for me, if other people can sometimes see them then they're welcome to appreciate them just like any other part of me. But no criticisms - just like any other part of me! < /snark >
I do have to admit that I have more than I originally anticipated. I kinda like the needle. :)

first holes in ears: cuz everyone else had them done
second: cuz i was pissed at my parents and i wanted to do something to piss them off too. (they never even said anything)
third: because many other people had done it and i wanted to do something unexpected for me.
extra curricular hole: because i wanted to do something to make me different than the girl next door and because i knew egami would love it.
but seriously... had piercing not been a semi-acceptable part of our culture, i wouldn't have done any of them or stopped at the first holes.

Tattoos... I wanted ink since I was a kid, probably because back then it WAS something that good girls didn't do (especially not LDS raised girls), but I still waited until I was 30+ because I wanted something that was ME, something I could live with forever.
If you don't do everything the way the hive mind says then you'd better already be at the forefront of new creative techniques, otherwise you are just a dumbass tard. It gets real tiring trying to be at the forefront; the hive is always right behind you ready to snatch your style, your creativity, and your credit. I think I'm just old now.
