buy a desktop and a pda instead. that is my advice. ;)
seriously though, most people dont really need a whole laptop and you can get way more bang for your buck with a desktop. what are you planning to use the laptop for? if its just to take notes at school you can do that with a pda. talk to brad, he can even tell you how to get one that will get on the internet. or you can get one that can access the wi-fi networks if they have those on campus.
Yeah, for the amount you would pay for any laptop, you could get an even faster desktop computer, plus an awesome PDA, including a keyboard for it. There are some really awesome models out there right now, including some that could also replace your cell phone and digital camera (for a price, of course). Anyway, I had a laptop before, but I don't think I could justify it anymore.
Here's a few examples:
I have a Palm Zire 72 which serves as a Dictionary, Calculator, Date Book, Address Book, To Do List, Multiple Alarm Clocks, Voice Recorder, MP3 Player, and accepts native Word and Excel files. To go with it, I have a universal wireless keyboard which is full-size but folds up to pocket-size. To top it off, my phone is a Sony Ericsson t610, which can connect wirelessly to my Palm via Bluetooth for mobile internet access. I also plan on getting a wi-fi card for faster internet access at hot spots
