To make it easier to explain, a hot waterfall is, in many ways, a lot like a hot shower. Ho! There was a book in my childhood - "A Warrior from Quirigua". terrific story.
Suppose it was inspired by theese stellae ( or stellas?)

Don't know about the book, but the story here is that Quirigua ruler, Cauc Sky, was put in power by the neighboring and much larger city state Copan (across the border in Honduras). But then he somehow managed to conquer Copan, behead their ruler Eighteen Rabbit, and erect dozens of stellas to commemorate his achievement.
