Tile is not an attempt to fight humidity. It is a Portugeese tradition. All Lisbon is covered by those kinds of tiles inside and outside the buildings (many of them blue). And Lisbon has a really dry climat.
They even do paintings on the tile panels, take them apart tile-by-tile and sell as souvenirs (that was tempting but damn heavy to take on the plane - I ended up bying just a one-tile picture)
