In a response-thread to another post, I found myself writing that I [...] believe that Christianity is not about how governments should be run, and that those who try to run a government based on it are focussing on "this world" instead of heaven ( Read more... )

I'll call you a damn commie, because you're embracing government mind control.

Can't oppresive dictators embrace government mind control too? ;-)

George Carlin went down this mountain some years ago and reached a similar conclusion:

Thou shalt always be honest and faithful to the provider of thy nookie.

&

Thou shalt try real hard not to kill anyone, unless of course they pray to a different invisible man than you.

Some Christians say Catholics worship graven images, to which I respond, "Be fruitful and multiply." Well, not in those words. (Ten points for id'ing that one.)

Too easy.

I'm not sure what the Ten Commandments have to do with Christianity, being, as they are, from the Hebrew Bible (sometimes called the Old Testament). What Jesus taught was rather different. The Sermon on the Mount, now, there's a good Christian document.

(If you can't tell whether I'm serious or have tongue in cheek, the answer is: Both.)

If it's too easy, you must be a little older than me ... I only ran across that rekkid recently, and was surprised to realize how funny he used to be. (Snipe, snipe.)

Yeah, and then there's this whole bidness with what parts of the OT are we supposed to obey and what parts are are we just supposed to honor as divine wisdom and the "history of salvation," (which is like this whole idea about how Israel existed solely for the purpose of bringing Jesus into the world... uh, right...) and all like that.

Or then there's my idea, which is that the Bible is a love letter from God to us.

Whatever.

Huh. I didn't think you'd be reading this, all that long religion crud.

Neither you nor cakmpls has actually, you know, named the artist yet. (I'll ask you to refrain since I know you know and I'd like to see if anyone else does.)

I won't name the artist, but he said it about a fender-bender, as I recall.

I didn't necessarily mean ALL of the 10 commandments... I need to learn to be more specific around you or else I get ridiculed. Thanks for making assumptions and thus making a fool of me.

No ridicule was intended; I assumed (perhaps foolishly) that this had to do with that there Su'rn jedge who went to the mattresses to keep the Ten Commandments posted in his court.

That said: even if you only mean "some" of the 10, well, 30% isn't much of a score; you'd probably do at least as well with the Code of Hammurabi (which has at least as good a claim to being the root of our modern codes of law).

Well I basically just used that as an example of something that everyone is familiar with; was one of the first things that came to mind. I also stated in that same paragraph that I was talking about things that "pretty much everyone sees as right and wrong" that are basic principles of Christianity.

That said, I apologize for my outburst. To put it in more adult terms, I felt very disrespected and belittled, as if you were using my young age against me. Whatever the intent, that's how it came across. I'm not upset anymore but I still wanted to express how I felt at the time. I don't have a problem if you disagree with me; I just ask that you do so respectfully. :)
