I like that Natural Balance doesn't have any ash. My kitty has had some UTI issues in the past, but they have all gone away since I started feeding Natural Balance.
All food has ash, ash is simply the measurement of the mineral residue leftover when the food is burned at a high temperature.
NB probably doesn't list their ash content because ash is a non-issue these days.
Ash is the old buzzword for cats with urinary tract issues, it was once thought that foods with a high ash content caused the problem, it has since been discovered that magnesium was the culprit, and the quantities of magnesium have been drastically lowered in cat foods in the past decade.
I feed kitten food to my ferrets. I've fed both Chicken Soup (kitten formula) and Natural Balance (their "regular" cat food) to my ferrets with similar results. Natural Balance has slightly lower fat content and slightly higher protein, if I recall correctly.
Other than that, I found the two to be roughly interchangeable. Ingredients are similar, it's just a matter of preference, really. Then you have other people who have had, like said above, problems with one ingredient or another, it could be the difference of a single ingredient making your pet smelly.
But right now my ferrets and my dog are on the Chicken Soup foods, and doing great. :)
