Ugh.

Q: Isn’t a hybrid just another fancy name for a mutt?
A: No, there are 3 classes of dogs. Hybrids, Mixed Breeds (also known as mutts) and Purebreds.

Q: What is the difference between a mixed breed and a hybrid?
A: A mixed breed is usually conceived through a random encounter or by accident. A female dog will go into heat and one of the neighborhood dogs will make his way into the yard and now you have a mixed breed. There isn’t much thought given to it and the results are unpredictable. A hybrid on the other hand is made by a competent breeder taking two registered purebreds and mating them together. There is a lot of care taken to make sure the dogs come from good lines, not having any genetic defects, making sure the female is larger than the male to prevent puppies from being to big for the mom etc... Many breeders now have multiple generations of good hybrid breeding with predictable results.
So -- if your golden retriever bitch gets knocked up by the local roaming standard poodle while she's in your backyard, the resulting pups are 'mutts,' but if you purposely breed her to a standard poodle, they're hybrids? WTF.

They do advocate going to the Humane Society first, but way to promote the 'American Canine Hybrid Club.' Puggles, labradoodles, and schnoodles, oh my. Along with 'Dorkies,' 'Doodleman Pinschers,' 'Shockers,' 'Brats,' and 'Wowauzers.'
