Protagonist; Literary Element

Protagonist: the character who traditionally undergoes some sort of change through the events of the story.

The protagonist is typically the MAIN character (or one of the main characters) but what if in a story, the character who undergoes the most change turns out to be (at least a little) less the focus than the main characters?

GRRM's Song of Ice and Fire is a great example of an epic fantasy tale that has a number of protagonists. The series is indeed epic enough that it is somewhat difficult to pinpoint *a* main character, and one of the things that keeps me reading is that amazing developments that the characters go through as it progresses. IMHO, one of the problems with many fantasy series is that the story happens around the characters and not vice versa.
