Not an incredibly big stupid (yet - but it has potential), but lots of little gems for your morning coffee:

Over in bad_service, silentsymphonie posts about an allegedy neglectful waitress who (almost) made them too late for a homecoming dance. This is not the stupid, per se.

The stupid comes with visionofclarity, who, as a speshulsnowflake former waitress, says, "Just because your Read more... )

What is the whole waitress/server thing? Is there something I'm missing?

Where I live, we have waiters and waitresses. It's not disrespectful, and if you called someone a server they'd probably look at you funny. Is the US different?

Ditto.

In fact, I'd go even further. To me, calling someone a "server" is more disrespectful than "waiter/waitress" because the word server is so similar to the word servant...

But that's just me.

Here in NZ they're called waiters and waitresses. Not servers.

*shrug* here, we sometimes have "them" calling themselves servers.

People need more things to be offended by!

If you live in a place where servants are very uncommon (or where they're not called "servants"), the word "server" doesn't have the same connotation. Some restaurants call their waitstaff "servers" for that reason.

There's also the fact that"waitress" is sometimes considered a less respectful term than "waiter" because historically waiters tended to work in better restaurants than waitresses. So instead of having waiters and waitresses (or waitstaff), they have servers and serving staff.

Myself I don't care either way, but there is some historical wank.

am I a huge grammar freak if the fact that it was "murder" instead of "murdered," which makes it not parallel, annoyed me?
