I love how people assume that just because someone is crappy with money and personal hygiene that they're mentally ill. That is my favourite assumption on the internet. I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but no one should assume that she is ill, or make excuses for someone that they do not know.

See, that's why I'm with the commenter suggesting that the landlord should talk to the Citizen's Advice Bureau & a doctor. Y'know, people who would be able to give informed advice on housing rights & mental health si action could be taken accordingly...

The lodger's behaviour seems to go a little beyond just being "crappy with money and personal hygiene" :-\ But I agree with czol - a diagnosis of any sort should be made by someone properly qualified, not Dr. LJ.
