It's a long time since I did Sociology, but can anyone remember where the studies might be found that show clear evidence that not all minorities are treated the same, and that in fact Asians are, in academic terms, seen as being more hard working and more intelligent and treated as such by teaching staff and admissions staff?
No, I'm not claiming Asians are not facing awful rracism on a daily basis, I'd just like to be able to point out to this asianrevenge that putting all minorities in the same box doesn't work in the real world, and that people with afro-Carribean backgrounds face completely different issues in some ways.
What you're talking about is commonly referred to as Asians being "model minorities." If you have access to a university library, try searching jstor for:
Model Students? Teachers' Perceptions and Expectations of Their Asian and White Students by Morrison G. Wong.
Asian Americans as a Model Minority: Self-Perceptions and Perceptions by other Racial Groups by Paul Wong.
Educational Expectations of Asian American Youths: Determinants and Ethnic Differences By Kimberly Goyette.
That last one is particularly interesting because she compares Asian American students to White students. Just keep in mind that these expectations can sometimes be hurtful for these youths.
If you can't access those exact articles, just google it :) Very interesting topic.
Cheers, them's the bunnies! the ones we studies would have been slightly different, being based on British Asian students, and also on Black British students, but I imagine it would be fascinating to compare.
I don't know about studies, but one of the most amusing in a trainwreck way things I've seen IRL lately was some girl lunging across the aisle on the bus to grab an Asian man's hand and ask, "Why are you people so good at math?" Kudos to him for giving her a blank stare and saying, "We really aren't all good at math, you know," since I think I would have smacked her.
Haha, srsly. I believe it's administered by The Mumsy and Dadsy Foundation, but only on the condition that you consume five jars of mayonnaise a year, wear too much hemp jewelry, and call everyone "brah".
