There was an ad -- a giant, brightly colored ad covering the bottom of the screen -- during an important and dramatic moment. (There were no unimportant or non-dramatic moments

I was really afraid this episode was going to have River "SPOILERS!"-ing her way throughout it like in FotD/SitL so the fact that she didn't made it a thousand times better for me.
I'm still iffy on the new things the Angels can do and was also all, "why didn't this happen to Sally?" as well. I did love the reveal that the statues were Angels all along.
Now they're sort of like "imagine if Samara from the ring was actually a creepy statue.
Thank you! I was wondering why the video felt rather familiar.
I liked Amy in this episode as well because she wasn't automatically jealous of River and was perfectly happy to tease the Doctor about his future relationships. I also loved her "close one eye at a time" approach to avoid blinking that fandom seems to love to suggest. (Am I the only person who can't do that?) My only problem with her was that she made the classic horror movie mistake of not getting out of the trailer as soon as the creepy stuff started happening.
And the lipstick thing? Come on. This woman does not get to start

It felt like Moffat knew the spoilers thing would get old, and just forced one in there because he thought he had to.
I loved the reveal, too. One in a whole series of great moments in the catacombs.
Samara is probably the thing I am most scared of, so anything vaguely Ringish brings her to mind instantly.
I didn't think of Poison Ivy. My head went straight to Firefly's Yoland/Saffron/Bridget!Poison Ivy! Oh good. I couldn't remember for sure if anyone from Batman had really done that, and I thought I might be imagining it. I completely failed to think of YoSaffBridge. Now there's an example of a character doing the spy stuff right. She can do everything River can (and I'm sure would time travel and say she'd married the Doctor if those were things in Firefly), and nobody gets annoyed and calls her a sue for it. They brought her back for another episode and it was also great

I've never really been able to wrap my head around fandom's insistence that certain characters are Mary Sues. I suppose if the character popped up in a fic, I would think "Mary Sue" but when it's on screen I'll either think "awesome character!" or "awesomely annoying character!" (YoSaffBridge was totally in the former category for me! :D) I probably have some double standard issues hidden somewhere.
As for the lipstick, unless they had some natural immunity to it like Poison Ivy (I think -- most of my knowledge comes from the animated series), it's one of those things that my brain just glosses over so I can enjoy the story. Given that you're often (inadvertently) eating your own lipstick it seems like the worst place to hide a poison or hallucinogen!
But YoSaffBridge wasn't a Sue. In fic, people would have a kneejerk reaction to an original character getting screentime and assume she was a sue, but she wouldn't actually be.
Apparently, Doctor Who fandom does that even with the screen.
River probably has no natural immunity. Therefore the entire episode is a hallucination she's having while the guards -- one of whom is very confused when she tries to kiss him -- arrest her. Which really explains everything else.
