Question re: Watson and Rugby

Aug 05, 2010 20:56

I'm not lacking in rudimentary rugby knowledge, growing up in a rugby nation as I have, however, I am a little indecisive as to which position Watson was likely to have played. ACD never actually mentions it as far as I am aware, and even though I only need this info for a tiny little insignificant line in a fic, I like to stay as realistic as ( Read more... )

I do tend to go a little overboard in researching for fics. I wrote a 6 page non-essay prosopographical thingie on Watson, his being a doctor, and the Afghan war a few months back. It has maps and everything. *laughs at self*

Judging from your link to the breakdown of positions, Watson MUST be Number Eight - Rounding out the forward pack, this man has no need for a name; rather one refers to him only by number. Sharing many of the versatile and athletic traits of the flankers, he is clearly the most valuable man on the rugby pitch. He may be seen running over opposing forwards, rucking for the otherwise helpless backs, or making booming hits in the open field. He has the speed to run around the defense, but would rather run over them if presented with the option. Although he is not as groomed as those in the back line, the number eight is one of the most handsome players on the squad.

Other than that, all I know is what my university friend (who played prop) told me to remember - "No matter where it is, the ball is not dead until the whistle blows." Who knew rugby was an audience participation sport?

Seriously, I wish I could be more help.

No Way
Number 8 aka Lock is usually the biggest and strongest man on the side. It would take Jonah Lomu to lift one off his feet and for a normal three-quarter to throw him into the crowd is totally unbelievable.
To be brutally honest the words most closely fit to Watson having played hooker, but his style in other stories do not suit that so the most most plausible answers from the data provided is wing-forward, followed by full-back and three-quarter. Fly-half is also technically possible but fits less well and while Ferguson could have thrown a scrum-half over the ropes that would have been viewed as "unsporting".

Ta! I was jokingly considering number 8 at the very beginning for the characteristics, but yes, physically Watson doesn't fit the profile.

So we're looking at a flanker or the full-back. Might just have to throw a vote or roll a die.

Thanks so much for helping to narrow it down. ^_^
