(I have not personally seen this romance novel trope with the sexes reversed; am I correct in assuming it's the same, or is there a noteworthy gendered difference?)

My romance reading is severely limited -- I think the only vampire ones I've read that were actually in the romance category would be Lori Herter's trilogy, and that was long enough ago that I can't recall the titles. I may also be misremembering that Darienne was David's sire/master/whatever-term-Herter-used-if-any. But if she was, it wasn't a reversal of the trope with the hero and heroine, but its own trope with the "old flame" and the hero. They remained friends-with-benefits, with the benefits tapering off in direct proportion to the hero's involvement with the heroine.

I've actually seen much the same thing behind covers with fantasy imprints, and wondered which direction the cross-pollination went first. Because it's pretty much a given that it exists.
