Rush Limbaugh is dead. He died of cancer. I recall somebody talking about his Christmas Eve broadcast, how it sounded like he was saying good-bye. He probably knew that he was close, that his time was near.

I knew I wouldn't be the only one, but when I started writing "Remembering Rush Limbaugh" on Blogspot I hadn't read the other decent memorial posts yet. I never turned on radio to listen to a talk show in my life but the Limbaugh Show helped me reconnect with my blind father and with clients and co-workers who were fans, and I came to respect what Limbaugh did.

Still, why so many words for a radio person I never listened to and so few for a close real-life friend, or for Alex Trebek (whose show I watched at every opportunity) or for several writers whose books I collect? Not sure. I think the Washington Post's blatantly tacky piece triggered my inner contrarian. Lots of people wrote decent memorial pieces about Alex Trebek or Leonard Nimoy or Terry Pratchett. I thought only Republicans were going to write them for Rush Limbaugh...

I think he was a trailblazer for all serious bloggers, Left and Right.

Yes. I felt the need to say something, not because Rush needed more praise (he gets plenty of that from other people), but to talk about why dancing on his grave is in bad taste. He meant a lot to very many people and made a big difference in their lives.
