Fools and Little Children

Over the weekend I played three micro-tournament sessions at BridgeBaseOnline, 12 boards apiece, where each player gets his/her own table along with three robots; such an arrangement is typically known as a Robot Tournament. Each robot plays a variant of 2/1, though you don't need to know the particulars of 2/1 to join in this complete misadventure ( Read more... )

Suppose RHO has the 8♦, KQ♠, and 10 clubs. Play a heart from the board on trick 1 (yes, lose the first trick). If RHO plays another club, rough high in your hand, discarding a heart on the board. Then play the both aces in hand. (If RHO plays a diamond or spade on trick two, you get to play your aces sooner.) After you play your aces, play the 6♠, leaving RHO on lead with only clubs. Trump his lead on the board, then play a low spade forcing the jack from LHO, and trump high in hand. Play a low diamond to the board, drawing the last trump, and play the 3 good spades on the board against your hearts in hand. Your trump tight hand takes you home to 5♦ on time.

So I prayed for this very particular RHO hand, but not inconceivable given the bidding history. What did you thought of? Thanks for sharing! This was a great puzzle!

Let me know if you see a flaw in my analysis. I had to rewrite it several times.

Even allowing for the RHO/LHO stuff, it's a perfect analysis. Very nice!
