So with the third episode of Bates Motel, I realize that I am actually attached to characters. This is distressing, since there's no way everyone is making it out of this season alive. And because baby Norman Bates is going to grow up into the sweet young man who kills people while dressed up like his mother we see in PsychoI just. I was not ( Read more... )

So would you recommend Bates Motel? I've been wanting to see it, but I started the first ep and got bored, though tbf, my attention span was super short that day. WHAT KIND OF ATTACHMENT?

(oh god my presence is also super sparse anywhere these days too /o\)

I was unsure about the first episode tbh. It was decent, but I was kind of ?? about where it was going. But then it really picked up after that. (THE TOWN IS SECRETLY TERRIBLE.) I would say that it seems legit good so far, as opposed to The Following which is ridiculous but I enjoy. (WARNING for rape and other violence. And also the relationship between Norma and Norman being emotionally abusive and suffocating and kind of incestuous. It's honestly pretty disturbing at times.)

The casting of Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates is ridiculously perfect. He really seems like a baby Norman Bates as played by Anthony Perkins, with the boyish smile and mannerisms. And then Vera Farmiga as his mom!! (Who incidentally is the older sister of Violet in American Horror Story, which I haven't actually seen. They're 21 years apart.) Norma frightens and fascinates me ( ... )

SO I WENT AND MAINLINED THE FIRST THREE EPISODES

Jesus the incest subtext is super disturbing, like, OH MY GOD NORMA, but not just Norma, Norman himself is just. Very very disturbed and doesn't want his mom dating anyone ever omg, this baby serial killer, jesus. I am super uncomfortable with it, SUPER UNCOMFORTABLE. I really like it a lot so far, though, because idk DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILIES AND BABY SERIAL KILLERS!!! /o ( ... )

ON TV TROPES, under Berserk Button for Norman: Anytime a member of the opposite sex shows interest in Norma in front of him. For Norma: Anytime a member of the opposite sex shows interest in Norman in front of her. LIKE. (I mean I don't think it's quite a berserk button for Norma at this point, but she does go straight to sabotage.) The relationship is just. Really disturbing.

I get Bradley's interest in Norman in episode three, what with him giving her an actual plant and the experience with parental death. And he's a "nice boy" that she can direct the relationship with. ("I just want to be happy" oh no.) But before that it's a little weird.

Poor Dylan. Also I find him distressingly attractive in that one scene where he's smoking in episode two. For reasons I don't entirely understand. ...I kind of want a fic where Dylan takes Norman away, and then sometimes helps Norman cover up the people he murders in his fugue states.

Oh, Shameless! I'm hoping you'll like Karen in season two.
