This is terrific historical fiction-- you feel as 'in the moment' as Sam does, and understand why he decides not to run.

And then he sees something else - the hope flickers, dies, but is replaced by something else - resolve
Very well described. Sometimes when victory is unlikely, people will turn instead to 'honor' with equal strength.

Thank you - I think writing war conflict is one of the most interesting things, not for the brutality or bloodshed but for the humanity that comes out in those moments. Times that try mens' (and womens') souls, and all that.
