I love first contact stories, and this is a really, really well done one. Your aliens are really alien, and the fundamental concept that communication is hard is there loud and clear - whether or not it's between species or just between people. This is great. I agree with some of the other commenters that clearing up exactly HOW the misunderstanding happened would add to the piece overall, but I do think it stands strongly without that, too.
