Claire wanted time alone.

It's weird, meeting your birth father and your grandmother for the first time, only to be told you're being shipped off to Paris. Not to mention saving your uncle's life. An uncle you really didn't know was your uncle when you first met him ( Read more... )

"...Hey?"

A moment later, two heads poke out from the window of a squat, dirty brick building. One is brown and curious, the other is black-haired and waving tiny arms and legs.

"BAH!"

"Hang on," says the head capable of coherent speech. "I'll be right out." A few minutes later, he's out the door and on the street and walking toward her, the baby settled on his hip.

There's a baby. That's not what Claire expected. But then, this is so far off the range of what she expects, ever, that she's not got much more capacity for wierd. Even for her.

She steps back, even from the baby, and backs against the wall.

The wall that doesn't have a door in it.

"What's going on?"

Even the power of the baby can't calm her? Sokka looks a little disappointed about this, stopping fifteen feet away, as soon as she backs up.

"Well, um..."

"Ahhh momomomo."

"Yes, I know, shh for a second." The baby's hair is ruffled gently and Sokka tries to smile as non-threateningly as possible. "Uhm... how familiar are you with different dimensions, universes, all that stuff?"

"I don't watch Star Trek," she says dryly

Which apparently should answer that, but still...

"Did my... did Angela do this?"

One of the things Barbara misses most now that she can't user her legs is pacing. Not nervously, of course, but... to keep her body occupied while she's thinking.

She's settled on a makeshift chin-up bar across the doorway of one of the abandoned buildings near the wall. This is the first time she's seen someone appear, and it's sort of anticlimactic. Still, she settles into her chair, runs a ratty looking towel across her face, and rolls forward.

"Hello."

Claire is blonde, well-dressed, and right now indredibly apprehensive, holding her arms across her chest defensively.

The wheelchair helps Barbara seem non-threatening, but she still takes one small step back.

"What's going on?"

"Good first question," Barbara smiles and stops rolling forward, using tone and body language to project "harmless" all over the place.

She nods at the wall, "See where it says 'Eden'? That's what we've been calling the place."

Claire's naturally trusting. The problem is, being naturally trusting has kind of got her in trouble recently, so she's trying not to be.

Instead she glances over her shoulder, reads the word, and points out:

"That's not what I asked."
