I can't say that Traverse Town was a complete waste of time, but it's close. No libraries, nor any other researchers that I could see. Maybe I should have talked to some more of the locals - or who seemed to be locals - but the one group I saw the most of, besides Zack, were busy with the hole in the inn's roof
