it's all about cycles and maintaining a balance as well. grandmaster flash and the furious 5 started dressin' all punk and "futuristic" in the 80s after all the hype from "the message". sugar hill gang rapped about havin great big cadillacs. slick rick is one of the greatest storytellin mc's yet he managed to flaunt big gold chains. phife from a tribe called quest always wanted to be dipped in the freshest gear. and all this was before the great big marketing of the culture.

so when talking about class and hip hop, it's always important to remember how old schoool cats got down. kinda opens up perspectives on the different types of styles that comprise the culture.

what are your thoughts about hip hop now being marketed to middle class, white kids in the subarbs, who represent the biggest market (the most dollars), and effects on radio stations since the early 90's? (i.e. KUBE)
