Thank you for visiting our community! The photo of the "nice vacation home" is actually a year round residence that has been the same family for multiple generations. I grew up across the street living above what at one time was "The Hudson Lake General Store". Unfortunately a combination of easier access to cities like LaPorte to the west and South Bend to the east, my parents retiring, and me choosing a high tech career the store is no longer in business. I'm 55 and still live at the lake. The "abandoned office building" was a grocery store until the the early 80's. The building is now use as a by appointment auto mechanical service. The "recycling facility" is the old elementary school, we have a new one just outside of town. This building is now used by a fire/water restoration business. The sign in your photo is for a local lady who collects aluminum once a month to help fund the a water fowl rehab operation at her residence.
Come to think about it, I was thinking about writing a short story about Hudson Lake, and I was wondering if you would be willing to answer a few questions about the town's history and other pertinent details. Even if the story doesn't wind up very good, I would like to at least try to get those things right.
don't bother with your hudson lake story. i was underwhelmed with the lack of interesting information that you managed to procure with your visit to Hudson Lake and New Carlisle. Do some reading first and don't be so judgmental, it's quite a telling about the type of person you are. I grew up in hudson lake and as the man above said, the campsite is pretty much a year long residence, the banquet hall used to be a hotel that al capone and his cohorts would stay at when they came to the blue lantern to see the likes of Bix Beiderbecke and the boys. There are a lot of old stories that are fascinating had you not chickened out and just asked someone, not that all residents know these stories but many do. Like the rumored secret passage ways under the blue lantern… and you would have needed about 6-8 hours to walk around the lake, depending on stride
