On Stephenie Meyer's gender-swapped Twilight, Cleolinda's recaps and fanfiction

Oct 07, 2015 12:57

So yesterday, Stephenie Meyer surprised everyone by releasing a rewriting of "Twilight" where the genders of most characters were swapped. If you're thinking "wait, didn't I read a fanfic like that?" - we live in a world where a Twilight AU fanfic was able to make millions of dollars, and at least one other Twilight fanfic got some decent sales. As it's been pointed out by someone else on Twitter, Meyer might as well do the same.

And I'm sure nobody was surprised when cleolinda decided to live-tweet her reactions to the book pretty much as soon as she bought it. She wrote recaps of the original series that were both thoughtful and entertaining, and she wrote what I maintain is still one of the best analyses of the series' appeal to date. The live-tweets weren't quite the same thing, but they are still as thoughtful and as entertaining as the recaps.

I actually think I might recommend the live-tweets to the people who may not be familiar with the saga. Cleolinda digs into how the gender-swap affected the narrative and characterization, and how our perception of characters' actions changes when the genders are reversed. That is something that is relevant to all fiction. Heck, it's kind of relevant to real life.

I hope that Cleolinda would do a post about those things once she actually finishes the book. Or even a tweet or 12.

So long as we're talking about gender-swapped "Twilight," I feel that I would be remiss if I didn't mention "Moves in Mysterious Ways," a fanfic by gotosleeplisse that offers a pretty poignant take on the concept [Spoiler (click to open)]or at least that's what it looks like at first, and it's pretty well-written, too.
