Brilliant! And yes, Lovecraft pioneered a type of materialist dread in his stories: the universe is dead and uncaring and so vast as to reduce humanity to irrelevance.

And of course there's the "They were men!" line from mountains, and the socialist cone being scientists up in the Great Sandy Desert

Some very intelligent people indeed were flirting with racial supremacism in the 1930s: Lovecraft is just the tip of the iceberg.
