Yesterday would have been H.P. Lovecrafts 120th birthday. He would have been astonished at the influence his horror stories have had. Brilliant! And yes, Lovecraft pioneered a type of materialist dread in his stories: the universe is dead and uncaring and so vast as to reduce humanity to irrelevance.

Well, he was mellowing out in later years, thanks to the influence of his friends like Frank Belknap Long and, of course, his wife Sonia Green. He even has in one of his letters "What a colossal ass I was!"

And of course there's the "They were men!" line from mountains, and the socialist cone being scientists up in the Great Sandy Desert

I like to think, hopefully, that many of the lunatic but nevertheless gifted racial bigots of former eras might have been persuaded to hold other views by the increased availability of information and contact in modern times, and just the zeitgeist in general.

Some very intelligent people indeed were flirting with racial supremacism in the 1930s: Lovecraft is just the tip of the iceberg.
