I think its funny compared to sport because in sport when someone or a team is really inept you see their distress, shame and sense of failure about being crap. You can identify with their pain. Inept politicians, though, seem to have absolute self belief and appear to be untroubled by their crapness, which makes them comic.
Lateline last night was fantastic television, I giggled all the way through Tony Jones interviewing Michael Johnson. Have a look on the website if you didn't see the interview - it is still there (10 mins).
