Totally right there with you on Artemis Fowl. Did not get IT.

I still have not gotten around to Son of a Witch. Heart!hands to Wicked, but I made it though the Ugly Step-sister one and...Mirror Mirror and was disappointed by Mirror Mirror.

I need a *chinhands* icon...

I think you and I tend to have fairly similar taste in novels in terms of what genres we'll pick up, so it probably is a genre issue then. The folks who really loved it in our little gang were definitely the Y.A. readers and writers.

Eeee, and the third and final book of the series is out now too, eh? I haven't picked that one up yet. Haven't read any of his other books either, sadly, though I believe my sister owns a couple of them so I'd be able to mooch them easily enough. *g*

Hee! This is the chin-handsiest I've got, I think...

Have you read any of the Mysterious Benedict Society books? I like them, but...they're kind of falling in the Artemis Fowl category for me. So maybe it *is* a genre thing.

Oh, you're right, I'd forgotten about that! How was Son of Witch? Readable?

Hee! So chinhandsy. :D

Alas, I haven't... I'm fairly certain I haven't actually read anything middle grade since I *was* in the middle grades until this year. *G*

Quite readable and significantly less dense and brain-breakingly political than Wicked, frankly. Helps if you remember the plot of the first book, as it really does clear up a lot of the wtf moments and mysteries of that one.

Heeeeeehehehe! Oh sure, pick the one that I can't give an all-compassing little three-sentence snippet on! XD Man, my thoughts essentially boil down to "homg, it's been a long damn time since I was able to lose myself in a world like this" and "it's like Tolkien without the randomly five-page songs!" and "sir, if you kill Tyrion or maim him any further, I will be very upset with you". I really need to get my mitts on the fourth book already.

(Have you seen the official trailer-thingy for season two?! Oh man, I yelped in joy, heart-clutched, babbled nonsensical nonsense about Onion Knights... *g* It was a somewhat disproportionate reaction to a one-minute teaser, I will admit.)

I have a strong love for Artemis Fowl. But I won't hold it against you ;)

Also, Bitten! My friend lent that to me years ago for the sexy bits. It made me have adolescent feels.

I've never read Artemis, but some of the teachers in our department speak fondly of the series. I do think you might have to appreciate middle-grade novels to understand it, although the premise is quite interesting.

You could also count in terms of pages. I would imagine that taking on Martin's works slowed you down. (And wouldn't you be reading other things in law school?).

Your taste is fine. As one of my undergraduate professors (a specialist in modern romance novels) once said, "a book holds no inherent quality; such things are really a measure of what the reader brings to the book." If you read it as a guilty pleasure, then that's what it will be!

I am still amused by the lack of an asterisk beside Catcher.
