Grammar help, pretty please?

I'm so completely done with trying to figure this one out. Would it be...

"The purpose of the amendments is to yada yada yada."

or

"The purpose of the amendments are to yada yada yada."

I thought the word in issue here was talking about the purpose, which is singular, so it should be 'is'. But now my partner has doubts and for the life of ( Read more... )

Purpose - singular = is.

I can see how people might question. Word often gets confused too and tells you it should be are when in no way should it be plural.

Word cheerfully informs me that both are correct. Oh, Word, you never fail to amuse me.

Not terribly old, and I don't think I've had many occasions to use it much. I think I added it about the Wilson mood theme came along so there were other pretty things distracting me when posting. :D
