AU, for Duo

Jul 20, 2006 00:04

Polly'd been tired lately, in a way that had little to do with how long Duo had kept her up last night. Neither would it account for the slightly queasy sensation that Arya's cooking had improved far too much to be blamed for. She'd heard (only since she'd been here, admittedly) of tropical islands having diseases of their own, though ( Read more... )

Duo came through the brush whistling. Things were great. He'd rinsed off in the ocean after Forrest had let them go for the day, was wearing a singlet and jeans and no shoes, and was feeling a little sore from the hard labor and a little burned by the sun, but in a friendly way. He had a bag over his shoulder with some shrimp, some wood, some matches and some lighter fluid, and he was going to grill and be all many and stuff. It was going to be a good night.

"Oi, Pol!" he chirped, grinning widely as he slung the bag down and moved to go sit by her.

"How're you- Hey," he said, siting back abruptly. "You okay?"

Polly had schooled her expression into a more normal sort as soon as she'd seen Duo- which, she realized, was probably plenty of giveaway all by itself. Nevertheless, she maintained a level of normalcy. Some things came first, after all.

"Duo," she began, "I never asked before because, well, everything was going so well and I didn't want to risk changing anything, but... where you're from, and all that. What do you people think about marrying?"

Duo blinked.

"Um, I'd never really thought about it, but...it's pretty common practice. Um, y'know, people fall in love and eventually they decide they want a big party and a ring and stuff to go with it, so they get married. Different wedding depending on the religion, but....um..." He went quiet.

They'd been together for a while. Duo had no plans on them not being together. He hadn't ever planned on being married, though, either. He didn't find himself as vehemently opposed to the idea as he used to have been.

"....Why, is that...something you've been thinking about?"

"A little," Polly confessed. And it was true, even before this- not all the time, but occasionally, often while as the damnable song said she was lying in bed, it had crossed her mind.

Never with any urgency, though, not till this had happened.
