New Who 11.9 It Takes You Away

Tonight's episode really made me realise how much I love it when Doctor Who does surreality and alternative universes - like the Fourth Doctor's trips inside the Matrix and into N-Space. You can't do it all the time. The series has to be kept grounded in reality, otherwise the sense of any real stake in anything would be lost and people would lose ( Read more... )

I thought that too at first, but then I began to suspect that people's faces looked different, and realised I could check by paying attention to partings (the Doctor's and Graham's, mostly - Yaz and Ryan don't have them). That confirmed it, and made me grin.

I hadn’t noticed the flip either! I got strong Coraline vibes off this episode - but agree it was one of the best this series.

Ah, so that is what you were being cryptic about on Facebook! I wanted to know, but by the very terms of the question could hardly ask. I haven't read it, so can't judge myself, but if I ever do I'll bear this in mind.

P.S. I've now read the Wikipedia plot summary of Coraline and very much see what you mean. I think it's another proof of mid-70s script editor Robert Holmes' observation that Doctor Who is at its best when its roots are showing.
