Suddenly Ray appeared at the window in front of Horatio, arms loaded with firewood. He pressed his nose up against the glass and made a face.

Movement at the window caught Horatio's eye, and he looked up in time to see Ray pull a horrible face. With a startled smile, Horatio stepped back from the glass and went to the door to let Ray and Diefenbaker inside.

Dief went right for the little dog bed Horatio had made for him of Christmas patterned quilts.

Ray greeted Horatio with a cold-mouthed kiss and knocked the snow off his bright red boots before heading over to the fireplace to set the wood down. "It is colder than a mother-in-law's love out there," he announced.

Horatio's eyebrows drew together. "I wouldn't know," he said, touching lips still cold from Ray's kiss with his hand. "That's a far cry from our old firepit," he observed.
