I had spent my life being underestimated. My brother, Bryce, had given up on me ever being a proper lady at some point, but he was gone now. I was on my own and free to follow whoever I would. And I would follow Darian.

I had thought to only lend my sword to his group of men but now, it seemed, I would play a bigger role in Darian’s quest, since only a woman would not be fooled by the Red Eyed Woman. I did not know if the reason we were immune to Her magic was because she did not feel that we held enough power, so we were below her notice; or if she just didn’t have the power to touch us.

I would have to lead them through the woods.

“I’ll help you find William of Ustler,” I told Darian’s men as they got ready to start off again. The men’s snorts of derision enraged me, “don’t be stupid!” I snapped.

“She is right,” Darian said smiling at me. His smile almost made me forget my dreams of vengeance. Almost, “she found us in this Magic woods. She seems to be immune to this magic.”

“I am,” I said. I couldn’t keep the fierceness out of my voice. I felt like I was made of steel, I felt like the edge of a sword. I looked around and saw a path winding through the wood. The path looked like a song. I could feel music when I looked at it. The music of my coming vengeance.

“Then lead on My Lady,” Darian said giving me that smile again. I decided to think about how his smile made me feel later, after this adventure was over.
