"Dear Much, so young, so innocent." The mistresses fingers were cold and clammy as they held his, squeezing his fingers, her eyes former shadows of what used to be blue and glistening. "I'm relying on you to get Robin through all of this.  Promise me you will care for my boy. I fear he may be lost in all of this."

He'd nodded his head and promised wholeheartedly, making sure she was aware he meant it when he promised her, giving her a stoic stare. She had smiled, and with a contented sigh, lay back on her pillow looking a little more at ease.

Robins world had spiralled out of control when his mother died, and Much was true to his promise, he made sure he got him through it with a steady determination.

It seemed worse when the master died.  They were eighteen, and Robin had retreated into a silent brooding, unwilling to talk, unwilling to listen.  He pushed everyone away. He tried to push Much away, but a promise made years before still resonated inside him. He wouldn't fail in keeping that promise.   The promise had set him on a resolute path and he wouldn't be swayed from it.  He hadn't known it at the time, but the promise made to the dying mistress, had set out his whole future.

Because of it he followed Robin to the Holy Land, despite his own self telling him to stay.  Because of it he had developed the habit of jumping in front of Robin with only the protection of his shield to save both their lives.  Robin had called him a pox and still he stayed, whats more he forgave.

Robin pushed him away, held him at arms length, the closeness between them was replaced with a emptiness which couldn't be filled, yet still, he kept his promise.  Others didn't understand, why he stayed, why he remained faithful.  Robin didn't know of the promise made, didn't understand how it had shaped both their lives for them.

The words had echoed loud and heavy through his mind in the days after they buried Marian.  They woke him from his sleep, they filled up his thoughts.

"I fear he may be lost in all of this."

Much felt part of all of them had been lost that day.  He wasn't sure how much of Robin could be salvaged, for underneath the exterior of the brvae face and determination to continue the fight, the man was lost.  It was up to Much to bring him back, and he wondered if the lost could save the lost or if it were a case of the blind leading the blind.

But still, he'd never failed her before, after all, a promise was a promise.
